5 Tips to Develop a Self-Care Routine

Self-care – What is it?  It seems everyone’s talking about it lately but what exactly is it?

Self-care is time you spend on yourself to help you reset, reboot, and recharge.

What?  Me time?  Really?  I don’t have time for that.  I have too much on my plate as it is.  I have to take care of…kids, hubby, job, parents or…fill in the blank.

Does any of this sound familiar?

You are not alone. 

Recent studies show that 44% of individuals believe self-care is possible for those who actually have time and 35% believe it’s only for those who have enough money.

Well, in reality it’s about neither of those.  You don’t need a lot of time or any money to practice self-care.

Self-care is about taking care of yourself so you can be more present in your daily life.  It’s about taking time out of your busy hectic life so you can have more energy to focus on the things you need to take care of – like your family, your job, or whatever other responsibilities you have.  If you aren’t taking care of yourself, it’s hard to find the energy to take care of others.

Take time for yourself and you will have the energy and time for those who need you.

It only takes a few minutes for you to incorporate You Time into your day.

Here’s are 5 easy ways to create a self-care routine.

  1. Start you day with physical activity. Get up, stretch, get on your yoga mat for a few minutes and begin your day in a state of movement.  It can be real quick and simple.  Here’s a few ideas
        • Stand in mountain pose and stretch your hands over your head and bend from side to side
        • Bend into forward fold, clasp your hands on opposite elbows, and hang, letting your body relax and adjust itself
        • Start in table top position and do a few rounds of cat cow
        • Lay on your back, bring your knees to your chest and rock from side to side
        • Spend a few moments in child’s pose. If you’d like, reach over to the left, and then to the right for a deeper stretch
  1. Write in a journal and start the day with gratitude. What or who are you grateful for today?


  1. Don’t check your social media or emails first thing in the morning. This tends to put us into the mindset of whatever we are seeing and reading about.  Spend that time sipping your coffee, enjoy the sunrise, and maybe just being still.


  1. Get enough sleep. Spend the time before you go to bed mindfully.  Put on a sleep meditation, or soft relaxing music.  Let your mind quiet down so you can have a more restful slumber.


  1. Create your daily schedule and don’t forget to include YOU time. Put 10 minutes to an hour on your schedule that is just for you.  And don’t skip over it when life gets crazy.  That’s the time you need it most.


There are many things you can do to incorporate a little self-care into your routine that won’t take a lot of time or money.  And by taking time to nurture yourself you will be better able to take care of those that rely on you.
